Correspondence Files for United States Senators, 1950 - 1967

This series consists of correspondence received and copies of replies sent, newspaper clippings, memorandums, and reports documenting the exchange of information between United States senators, their staffs, and the congressional liaison staff in the Office of the General Counsel and its predecessors. Included are notes on the extent of the senator's involvement and interest in foreign affairs matters and his or her committee assignments. Topics of the records include requests for information or publications, recommendations of individuals for positions with the U.S. Information Agency, and foreign trips made by senators as part of fact-finding missions for the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and its subcommittees. These records were maintained by the Office of the General Counsel, Congressional Liaison Office, and its predecessors. Records prior to August 1953 were maintained by the Department of State, International Information Administration and its predecessor and were transferred to the U.S. Information Agency upon its establishment.
